Level 3 Award in Education and Training is the most popular course for new teachers or those wishing to start teaching since employers and vendors usually require it. In addition, since it is a Level 3 course, it has the least amount of teaching practice required.
Level 3 Award in Education and Training qualification has three units in total. Unit 1 and 3 are theory-based, so you will have to attempt some basic tasks on your current or potential role as a teacher.
Unit 2, however, of this Level 3 course requires that you deliver a micro-session of your teaching. There are three ways in which this requirement could be met.
Option 1:
You provide us with a recording of 1 hour of your teaching.
Option 2:
You join us on a Zoom call for an hour, whereby you teach for 15 minutes and observe your peers teach for 15 minutes each for a minimum of 45 minutes to complete the 1 hour.
Option 3:
You find an experienced teacher at work who is willing to be your mentor. That mentor will observe your teaching for at least one hour and complete the relevant paperwork. If you do choose this option, you will need to send an up-to-date CV with the relevant teaching qualifications of your mentor so that we can get this approved from our awarding organisation.
Most learners opt for Option 2 as it involves less hassle and the teaching session is shorter too. However, other options are equally acceptable, so it’s all about what suits you the best.
Steps to Preparing and Delivering your Micro-teaching Session
1. Pick a topic that you are most comfortable with. You need to have a decent bit of knowledge about the topic. It could be anything; it does not have to be an accredited course. You could, for example, teach for 15 minutes on BREXIT.
2. Prepare a lesson plan using either the format we would provide or a format of your own choice. It is the content that we are interested in and not the format of your plan.
3. Practice the actual delivery with friends or family members. If you prefer, speak in front of the mirror for 15 minutes.
4. Depending on the option you have chosen, complete the delivery.
5. While delivering, make sure to involve all the participants, ask questions and provide constructive feedback. Be inclusive and continuously interact with the participants.
6. Once you have completed the teaching, your assessor at School of Academics will provide the formal feedback within 3 days.
7. Once you have the feedback, you will need to self-reflect on your teaching session, taking the formal feedback provided into account. This will be reflective and not descriptive – meaning that you are to reflect and identify what went well and what did not. This allows you to take forward some areas of development and good practice.
Some important Do’s
1. Make it to the Zoom session once you commit, as your colleagues rely on your participation to complete their tasks.
2. Go through this blog and understand what is involved and expected from you.
3. Prepare a lesson plan that is well thought out with interesting bits of information and activities.
4. Practice with friends/family or even in front of the mirror
Some important Don’ts
1. Do not exceed your 15 minutes allowance, if you choose Option 2
2. Do not stress too much about how great the teaching session is supposed to be, as we understand that the session is for new teachers, so it won’t be perfect.
