Replacing the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET) and other DET qualifications from 1 September 2024, this qualification offers a new way for learners to attain Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status. This nationally recognised qualification is developed under the Learning and Skills Teacher occupational standards and regulated by Ofqual.

Learners will be able to gain contemporary and comprehensive knowledge of pedagogic methodologies, curriculum development, inclusive practices, assessment principles, professional development and reflective teaching.

This Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (FE and Skills) course is delivered 100% online, making it easier for learners to gain the skills and knowledge they need. The qualification also provides a robust foundation to prepare them for the challenges and rewards of teaching in the FE and Skills sector.

Duration and Delivery

Assessment and Verification

Finally, learners will participate in a final assessment involving a 30-minute professional discussion relating to any aspect of professional practice conducted with two qualified teachers/assessors, one from Britannia School of Academics and one from their placement.     For the Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (FE and Skills), the minimum required placement hours are 250 which are to be divided as such:

*Teaching Activities
Total 150 hours are dedicated to teaching practice to learners aged 14+ preferably in an FE setting out of which:

    i. 100 hours for the specialist subject area

ii. 50 hours for the subject area other than the specialisation

*Non-Teaching Activities
The remaining 100 hours of the non-teaching practice must be dedicated to completing professional activities such as:

  • Observations

    The minimum number of observations required throughout the duration of your course is 10 (of 45 minutes each) in which your practice will span small groups and large groups with learners aged 14+ and include all aspects of planning, delivering and assessment of learning. These observations are required to be signed off by your tutor or placement mentors. Out of these 10 observations, two observations can be live remote delivery and one session can be observed by the mentor remotely. However, recorded sessions will not be considered as formal observations.

    Mentors & Support Staff

    Learners need to have support from two mentors at their placement. The mentors are required to guide and support you throughout the qualification and liaise with the assessor/course tutor.

It is important that all records are kept by you of both mentor meetings, showing dates and basic details of discussion/support provided.

  • Location

    To increase your exposure and provide you with the experience of teaching in diverse environments, Diploma in Teaching qualification requires you to teach in two different teaching locations, with at least 20 placement hours dedicated to activities in the second location.

    However, if you work with an institute/provider that runs a good variety of different classes, you can choose to complete the practical requirement of second location at the same institute in a different department or subject area.
