Unit Structure

Overview

Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (previously known as A1 assessor course) is perfect for assessing learners’ competence for accredited courses. The A1 assessor course is an industry-standard qualification. Before the A1 assessor course, if you wanted to train to become an assessor, you would complete the D32 and D33 units. Later, these D units were replaced by the A1 Assessor Award. Finally, the A1 qualification was replaced by the current suite of qualifications, which are commonly referred to as TAQA training (Training Assessment and Quality Assurance) Qualifications.

Most training centres would expect you to have a CAVA assessor qualification before you start assessing qualifications in the FE and HE sectors. This Level 3 CAVA course equips learners with the skills required to assess vocational skills and knowledge in any workplace or classroom environment, regardless of their subject expertise, and therefore, you are not required to have any prior qualification or experience to start this Level 3 CAVA course. The classes will be delivered exclusively online via Zoom. The course is accredited by UK Ofqual and is delivered 100% online.

Duration and Delivery

The course, L3 CAVA, will be delivered via Zoom over 3 days.

Starting from Unit 1, learners will be given a thorough overview of key assessment aspects: functions, types, principles, assessor responsibilities, legislation, quality assurance, feedback, and CPD value. They will also be given an in-depth analysis of assessment methods, how to assess via various assessment methods, and make an assessment decision using a quiz activity accordingly.Top of Form

In the next session, in Unit 2, the learners will be educated on planning the assessments for occupational competence in the work environment, followed by several activities like practicing professional discussion, direct observation, and other assessment methods. Learners will also be able to know how to record assessment decisions and write reflective accounts.

In the last session, with the introduction of Unit 3 and the assessment plan, learners will attain proficiency in assessing vocational skills, knowledge, and understanding within a vocational setting. Learners will also receive a thorough understanding of recording assessment decisions and writing reflective accounts, followed by a quiz.

Assessment and Verification

Once the live Zoom classes/sessions are completed, learners are required to submit their assignments for all three units on our Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle) within one month. Learners will be assessed by observing them assess a candidate within their assessment area. Additionally, they will be assessed through a portfolio of evidence generated using various assessment methods.

All units within this assessor qualification are internally assessed by our qualified assessors and externally verified by the awarding organisation. The assessment takes the form of written assignments and demonstration of assessment skills through video recording, detailed guidance for which will be provided by the tutor.

What equipment do I need to participate in the lessons?

To fully participate in the live sessions via Zoom, learners MUST have the Zoom application installed on their devices, access to a reliable internet connection, a laptop, a laptop charger, headphones or earphones for better audio quality, a notepad, and pens or pencils to take notes. Additionally, it’s recommended to have a quiet and well-lit environment to minimise distractions during the sessions.

Is there any required coursework or assessments outside of class time?

Yes, learners will need to complete and submit assignments for all three units outside of class time. The class sessions primarily focus on explaining concepts, guiding learners through course content, and practicing using different assessment methods to prepare learners to carry out their actual assessments for Units 2 and 3.

How/where do I submit my coursework?

Learners will submit their coursework through our virtual learning environment (VLE) called Moodle for assessment and feedback.

Do I have to submit the coursework in the same week?

No, learners are not required to submit their coursework in the same week. After the classes, learners will have a month to submit their coursework for all three Units on Moodle. During this time, our assessors will be available to provide formative feedback for draft work.

How many resubmissions are allowed? Will it affect my grade?

There’s no restriction; you can resubmit assignments as many times as needed until you achieve a Pass grade. Moodle (VLE) allows for an unlimited number of submissions, so the number of submissions does not affect your course in any way.

What if I am unable to submit the assignments within a month?

After the one month duration expires, you will need to re-register by paying a small re-registration fee of  £149. This is to cover the additional cost we incur, such as VLE and tutor/assessor fees.

Can I progress through the units at my own pace, or are there set deadlines for each unit?

While there are no specific deadlines for completing each unit, it’s important to note that all coursework must be finished within one month after the classes. Additionally, it’s highly recommended that learners start with Unit 1, which covers theoretical aspects, before moving on to Units 2 and 3 (which focus on practical applications). This sequential approach ensures that learners have a solid foundation of knowledge from Unit 1 to effectively apply during the practical exercises in Units 2 and 3.

Will I be able to cover/perform the practical parts of Units 2 and 3 during the class sessions?

No, since simulation is not allowed in this course, the learners won’t be able to complete the practical part of the course (i.e. carry out their assessments) during the sessions. Instead, they will practice using various assessment methods with their peers to prepare for their actual assessments. These assessments will be conducted at their own time with their actual learners, ensuring real-world application of the knowledge gained.

I have worked in education for 34 years, in various guises. I managed a busy nursery for 12 years before branching out into Assessment and Quality Assurance, more than 20 years ago. My practice has developed alongside the ever-evolving training and apprenticeship sector, and I have worked in many different settings, including colleges, private training agencies and a foster care agency. I also work part time as a Higher-Level Teaching Assistant for a local charity that supports higher level education for young people with Special Educational and/or behavioural needs and as a tutor for a bespoke programme for one-to-one support.
