Can I Become a Teacher Without a Degree in the UK?

You may think that it is entirely impossible to become a teacher without a degree. But it is not true. Where the majority of routes to becoming a teacher are university-led, there are a few where you do not require a degree.

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) - the Most Common Route to Teaching

If you don’t know that already, in the UK, one of the most common ways to become a teacher is by gaining Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). This requires demonstrating that you meet the Teachers’ Standards set by the UK government; you must satisfy a few requirements, including an undergraduate degree.

You can apply for and gain QTS by gaining qualifications such as a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) – a university-led qualification. However, due to the requirement of a degree, going for a QTS is not the right answer.

An alternative option is to apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Status (QTLS) which does not require a degree. Having a QTLS status is the best option to become a qualified teacher without a degree.

What is Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills Status (QTLS)?

Qualified Teacher Learning and Status (QTLS) is a membership and a badge of professionalism. With QTLS, you can teach in the Further Education (FE) and Higher Education (HE) sectors, including vocational training centres and adult education.

Steps to Apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Status (QTLS)

The best and easiest way to gain QTLS is by obtaining a Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (FE and Skills).  This qualification provides a new pathway for learners to gain and apply for QTLS status. This qualification is designed for learners who want to become a qualified teacher without having a degree and teach in the post-16 further education and skills sector.
