Are you considering the Level 3 Award in Education and Training? Understanding the practical requirements of this qualification is key to ensuring your success.
Key Takeaways
- The Level 3 AET qualification requires delivering a micro-teaching session as part of its practical assessment requirements.
- Learners can choose from three flexible options to complete their micro-teaching session, including recordings, Zoom sessions, or mentoring.
- Effective preparation, practice, and reflective evaluation are crucial to successfully completing the micro-teaching component of Level 3 AET.
Level 3 AET is the most popular qualification for new teachers or those wishing to start teaching since employers and vendors usually require it. In addition, since it is a Level 3 course, it requires the least amount of teaching practice.
In this blog, we’ll walk you through the core practical requirements, explain why they matter, and give you a clear roadmap to fulfil them effectively.
Most learners opt for Option 2 as it involves less hassle and the teaching session is shorter too. However, other options are equally acceptable, so it’s all about what suits you the best.
Overview of the Qualification
The Level 3 Award in Education and Training qualification has three units in total. Units 1 and 3 are knowledge-based, so you will have to attempt some basic tasks in your current or potential role as a teacher.
Unit 2, however, of this Level 3 course is competence-based and requires that you deliver a micro-session of your teaching.
What is the Process of Micro-Teaching Session?
At Britannia School of Academics, learners have three options to complete their micro-teaching session, each designed to suit different preferences and professional circumstances.
Option 1 – Recorded Session
This option is ideal for learners who prefer to deliver their micro-teaching session independently in their own setting. You will conduct a full 60-minute lesson in a structured learning environment, ensuring that your teaching is interactive and engaging. Start by selecting a topic, designing a comprehensive lesson plan, and ensuring your session follows the required teaching standards.
The session must be recorded with your face clearly visible. To comply with Data Protection and GDPR, you may hide the faces of learners if needed, but their interaction and engagement should be evident.
Once the session is delivered, upload the recording to YouTube, a cloud service, Dropbox, or any other suitable platform, and share the accessible link with your tutor for assessment.
Fundamentals:
- The session must be inclusive, interactive, and engaging.
- Learners must be actively involved throughout the session.
- You must monitor learners’ participation and provide feedback at the end.
- The session must include assessment activities such as quizzes and interactive tasks.
- Follow the delivery guidelines properly for your teaching session.
Option 2 – Live Session
For learners who prefer a real-time teaching experience and cannot deliver a session in their workplace setting, this option allows you to fulfil the practical requirement through a live Zoom session arranged and managed by a Facilitator. The session lasts approximately one hour, with multiple participants taking turns to teach.
To begin, choose your teaching topic, develop a well-organised lesson plan, and prepare interactive activities for your 15-minute teaching slot. During the session, you will deliver your lesson for 15 minutes while observing and providing feedback on your peers’ teaching for the remaining 45 minutes to complete the one-hour requirement.
We arrange virtual sessions each month based on learner availability. To participate, request the schedule and secure the next available slot by using the ‘Message My Teacher’ option on Moodle. Your tutor will provide the necessary details, including the time, date, and availability of other participants. Once confirmed, you will receive a confirmation email with the session details, including the date, time, meeting link, and timetable. You must submit your lesson plan and teaching resources (e.g., PowerPoint slides) to your tutor at least 48 hours before the session.
Fundamentals:
- Deliver your lesson within the 15-minute time slot, including activities, Q&A, and assessments.
- Be flexible and make real-time adjustments based on learner responses.
- Observe your peers’ sessions and provide constructive feedback.
- Engage actively in other participants’ sessions.
- Learn, observe, and self-evaluate different teaching methods.
- Follow the delivery guidelines properly to ensure a structured session.
Option 3 – Mentor-led Session
This option is designed for learners currently working in a professional teaching environment and who have the opportunity to conduct their session under the supervision of a qualified mentor, supervisor, or assessor from their organisation.
Start by selecting a topic, preparing a structured lesson plan, and ensuring that your session meets the required learning objectives. Unlike other options, you do not need to record the session or attend a virtual class. Instead, your mentor will observe your teaching for an hour and sign off the relevant paperwork.
If you choose this method, you must get your mentor or assessor approved beforehand by meeting the following requirements:
- Submit your mentor’s CV and qualification documents to your tutor for approval.
- Your mentor must complete the Microteaching Observation Form (available on Moodle).
- The mentor will provide detailed feedback on your lesson preparation, teaching methods, delivery, monitoring, and learner engagement.
- Submit your lesson plan along with your observation form.
Fundamentals:
- The session must be inclusive, interactive, and engaging.
- The session must be one hour long.
- You must demonstrate effective lesson planning, delivery, and learner engagement.
- Follow the teaching delivery guidelines to ensure compliance with course requirements.
Regardless of the option you choose, each micro-teaching session provides a unique approach to demonstrating your teaching ability. Whether you prefer a recorded session, a live virtual session, or a mentor-led session, ensure that you meet the necessary requirements and guidelines.
What are the Micro-Teach Delivery Guidelines?
The micro-teach session is a key component of the Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET), requiring learners to plan, deliver, and evaluate a short teaching session. All three micro-teach options must follow these micro-delivery guidelines to ensure a successful session. Below are the key delivery guidelines for microteaching.
Duration: Each micro-teach session must be 60 minutes long. Learners delivering their session independently or under a mentor’s supervision must teach for the full hour. For those opting for a live Zoom session, the teaching time is 15 minutes, followed by 45 minutes of observing and providing feedback to peers.
Clear Objectives: A well-defined lesson should have clear aims and objectives outlining what learners are expected to achieve by the end of the session. These objectives should be specific, measurable, and aligned with the subject matter, ensuring that the teaching is purposeful and effective.
Lesson Planning: A well-structured lesson plan provides a clear roadmap for delivering an effective session. It should include an introduction, objectives, activities, resources, assessment methods, and evaluation criteria to ensure structured and engaging learning.
Teaching Methods: Make sure to use a mix of teaching methods to enhance learner engagement and understanding. Incorporating visual aids, interactive activities, discussions, and real-life examples ensures an inclusive and dynamic learning experience.
Delivery and Communication: The session should be interactive, allowing learners to ask questions and contribute to discussions. Additionally, the use of quizzes, polls, and hands-on activities can reinforce learning and make the session more engaging.
Monitoring and Feedback: During the session, learners’ participation should be actively monitored, and adjustments should be made to improve understanding if necessary. Providing constructive feedback in a clear and supportive manner is crucial, as it helps learners identify areas for improvement and build confidence in their learning process.
Most of the learners who enrol in Level 3 Award in Education and Training opt for Option 2 – Live Session. This method involves less hassle and the teaching session is short, which is easy to manage and can be done efficiently. However, other options are equally acceptable.
Steps to Preparing and Delivering Your Micro-teaching Session
- Pick a topic that you are most comfortable with. You need to have a decent bit of knowledge about the topic. It could be anything; it does not have to be an accredited course. You could, for example, teach for 15 minutes on BREXIT.
- Prepare a lesson plan using either the format we would provide or a format of your own choice. It is the content that we are interested in and not the format of your plan.
- Practice the actual delivery with friends or family members. If you prefer, speak in front of the mirror for 15 minutes.
- Depending on the option you have chosen, complete the delivery.
- While delivering, make sure to involve all the participants, ask questions and provide constructive feedback. Be inclusive and continuously interact with the participants.
- Once you have completed the teaching, your assessor at the Britannia School of Academics will provide the formal feedback within 3 days.
- Once you have the feedback, you will need to self-reflect on your teaching session, taking the formal feedback provided into account. This will be reflective and not descriptive – meaning that you are to reflect and identify what went well and what did not. This allows you to take forward some areas of development and good practice.
