The Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (Further Education and Skills) qualification is designed for learners looking to teach, refine and enhance their existing teaching abilities in the post-16 Further Education and Skills sector.
Replacing the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET) and other DET qualifications from 1 September 2024, this qualification offers a new way for learners to attain Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status. This nationally recognised qualification is developed under the Learning and Skills Teacher occupational standards and regulated by Ofqual.
Learners will be able to gain contemporary and comprehensive knowledge of pedagogic methodologies, curriculum development, inclusive practices, assessment principles, professional development and reflective teaching.
This Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (FE and Skills) course is delivered 100% online, making it easier for learners to gain the skills and knowledge they need. The qualification also provides a robust foundation to prepare them for the challenges and rewards of teaching in the FE and Skills sector.
This Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (FE and Skills) is for individuals who want to become teachers in the further education and skills sector.
The qualification is suitable for but not limited to the individuals and organisations that employ teachers and trainers, individuals who are interested in obtaining a recognised teaching qualification, current practitioners looking to enhance their skills and knowledge, professionals transitioning into the field of teaching from other sectors, individuals with a strong passion for supporting adult learners and promoting lifelong learning.
The qualification is also appropriate for colleges of further education, independent training providers, local authorities, the third sector, the military, uniformed services, young offender institutions, prison education and the probation services.

The learners must satisfy the following entry requirements:
Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (FE and Skills) course is designed to be completed entirely online, allowing learners to progress at a pace that suits them the best. It can take up to 12 months, depending on their previous experience and dedication to the course.
This Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (FE and Skills) course is delivered through our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) where all learners will be provided online tutor support to successfully complete their course.
All units within this Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (FE and Skills) course are internally assessed by our qualified assessors and externally verified by the awarding organisation in line with the Education and Training Foundation’s framework for teaching in further education.
Learners will be assessed through a portfolio of evidence which will consist of written assignments along with a record of the placement log, a record of a minimum of 10 observations (45 minutes each) and samples of work.
Finally, learners will participate in a final assessment involving a 30-minute professional discussion relating to any aspect of professional practice conducted with two qualified teachers/assessors, one from Britannia School of Academics and one from their placement. This vocational-based qualification will provide the opportunity to achieve practical skills, foundation knowledge and understanding of the teaching role in the Further Education and Skills sector.
Upon completing the Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (FE and Skills), learners will be able to pursue a higher-level qualification in the same subject area. This diploma will also prepare them for employment in a pre-service role and support a role in the workplace for those undertaking this qualification in-service.

Total 150 hours are dedicated to teaching practice to learners aged 14+ preferably in an FE setting out of which:
i. 100 hours for the specialist subject area
ii. 50 hours for the subject area other than the specialisation
*Non-Teaching Activities
The remaining 100 hours of the non-teaching practice must be dedicated to completing professional activities such as:
The minimum number of observations required throughout the duration of your course is 10 (of 45 minutes each) in which your practice will span small groups and large groups with learners aged 14+ and include all aspects of planning, delivering and assessment of learning. These observations are required to be signed off by your tutor or placement mentors. Out of these 10 observations, two observations can be live remote delivery and one session can be observed by the mentor remotely. However, recorded sessions will not be considered as formal observations.
Learners need to have support from two mentors at their placement. The mentors are required to guide and support you throughout the qualification and liaise with the assessor/course tutor.
First Mentor: Should be a subject specialist, equipped with all the required expertise to help teach in a specific subject area. They must be able to support you for at least 30 minutes per week.
